Wellness
When a school commits to a culture of wellness, it makes physical activity and healthy eating an integral part of every day for students, staff, and its parent community. It's a lifestyle that optimizes our genetic functioning to increase productivity.
The "New PE" was developed by Naperville, Illinois, PE teacher and coach Phil Lawler. Instead of the traditional sports-based PE program, the "New PE" is fitness-based where students are graded on how well they keep their hearts in their target zone through a variety of activities. Student achievement increased, obesity levels were below 5%, and students continued their healthy lifestyles beyond their public education. The program has been observed by educators from over 42 states and 11 countries.
Physical activity (PA) as an integral part of the school day can take the form of recess. Brain Breaks/Brain Energizers, Exergaming Labs.
